Physical Ways to Increase Your Overall Intelligence

Research has shown that better nutrition improves thinking skills in people of every age.

The 2 main physiological systems that contribute to brain power are:

  • Metabolism - the system of the body that converts food to energy.
  • Nervous System - the brain, (nerves and neurons), this lets us process information and make new memories.

Here are 4 chemicals that can help boost your nervous system with foods that you can find them in:

  • GABA - helps regulate anxiety. Can be found in: walnuts, broccoli
  • Serotine - Regulates your mood. Can be found in: bananas
  • Dopamine - Regulates your attention and motivation. Can be found in: Chicken, oats
  • Acetylcholine - Helps brain access memory and encode new memories. Can be found in: eggs, avocados

Oxygen for the Brain

A vital element for the brain is oxygen and one of the best ways to get oxygen to the brain is through regular exercise. Exercise increases blood flow and brings oxygen to the brain. Regular exercise will also improve your mood, and concentration.

Exercise does not mean dropping hours in a gym. You can do something simple like a morning walk or a simple job around a close by track or park.

Glucose Feeds the Brain

You can get glucose from anywhere, from rice to a bar of dark chocolate, it doesn’t matter. The only thing that makes it different is how long some energy lasts. Some sources provide something like a sugar rush (e.g. fruits and soda). They give you a quick burst of energy for the brain. Other sources like cereals and pasta are more complex so they provide a drip feed type of energy.

Glucose is not like fat because it can’t be stored. For that reason you need to have a constant supply.

Supplements

Some say that a higher dose of ‘x’ will improve brain power. They are not all true but some nutritional compounds do have an effect on some of the brains functions.

  • Vitamin B12 - It helps maintain healthy nerve cells. It can be found in a variety of meats (especially liver), but it is hard to get if you are a vegetarian. If you are a vegetarian you can get it in either supplements or in seaweed.
  • Caffeine - Can be found easily in tea, coffee, and soda. It is a mental stimulant because it does improve memory, alertness, and your mood in the short term. But, to much caffeine will lead to anxiety and sleep deprivation.
