The flow state is a new state of mind that psychologists have just started to research.
Essentially flow is a heightened place or way of thinking. You are completely calm, yet powerful, and you are confidently doing something at the peak of your abilities. In sports, you are “in the zone” when you reach a state of flow.
This heightened way of thinking is great, but once you notice that you are in a state of flow, it disappears.
There are ways to bring about flow, but these really can only be placed into an office like environment.
- Lighting, your chair, the temperatute, the music (if you have it) is just right.
- Get rid of any distractions that may take away your concentration.
- Focus on one specific thing that you are working on
Really that is all it takes. If you find yourself self conscious you will not reach a state of flow.
From my own experience I can say that flow is in a way sort of like hypnosis, your sub-conscious self is doing the work.
Harnessing this state of flow will help you work better in virtually any situation.
